MD Program

The Department of Emergency Medicine plays a critical role in undergraduate medical education. It's function is to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for students to become caring and competent physicians serving both individual patients, and the society in which they function.

Emergency Clerkship Schedules

All requests for scheduling days off must be submitted to the Program Assistant (aaron.desousa@kingstonhsc.ca) at least 6 weeks before the start of the block in order to be considered

Schedules will be posted to Elentra 1 week prior to the start of the rotation.

Clerks will be schedule for 6 Clinical shifts during their 2-week rotations. This will be split between two or three preceptors. Shifts are scheduled 7 days a week and include the final Sunday of the block, as well a statutory holidays.

Shift switching is not allowed on Emergency Medicine. Clerks are not permitted to work "back to back" shifts such as (0800-16:00 and 16:00-2200) or from an evening shift to a day shift the following day.

Teaching

Periop Teaching (https://meds.queensu.ca/courses/)

Teaching sessions are mandatory and you are excused from clinical duties to attend. You must sign-in on the sheets provided.

Periop block seminars / Periop technical skills sessions - students are to attend all of these sessions as per schedule

Emergency Medicine Teaching Shift - Scheduled for clerks on their indivual schedules.

Learning Modules

Completion of Technical Skills Modules is mandatory for students rotating through Emergency Medicine.

Electives (For Students Outside Queen's)

The Department of Emergency Medicine welcomes students who wish to do an elective in Emergency Medicine at Queen’s University. Electives are 2 weeks in length and subject to available space on the clerkship schedule. Description of the rotation and objectives can be found under the EM Clerkship Guidelines.

Students should apply for an elective through the AFMC Portal site.

Electives (Queen's Students)

The process is as follows:

You should then complete the application process through the MD Program office so that they can approve the elective
Sam Calder-Sprackman (MDProgram Emergency Medicine Director) will complete your elective assessment forms so she should be listed as the preceptor. Make sure the email address aaron.desousa@kingstonhsc.ca is on the elective application form (the MD Program office sends a copy of your documentation)
Elective clerks will trigger the Clerkship Emergency Medicine Shift Report assessment on every shift they work. At the end of the elective the program director will complete an exit assessment.

Observerships

Queen's Affiliated Medical Students: Contact Aaron.deSousa@kingstonhsc.ca for observership enquiries.

Please indicate if you have connected with a specific faculty member to do an observer shift.

Please provide Aaron with your availability 4 weeks in advance with a min of 5 dates.

Non-Medical Students: Contact Aaron.deSousa@kingstonhsc.ca and provide the following:

- CV

- KHSC Confidentiality Form

- Proof of 2 vaccinations

If you plan to work more than 3 shifts you must have a completed KHSC Communicable Diseases Form.
